Silk, leather, wool, and flax are some of the world's most luxurious and prominent varieties of upholstery fabric. Flax is one of the oldest fabrics in the world and in 2009 archaeologists in The Republic of Georgia uncovered flax fibers dating back to at least 30,000 BC. Flax as a fiber is 2-3 times stronger than cotton and was the most widely used fabric until the 19th century when cotton became the fiber of choice and, with the invention of the cotton gin, the most prevalently used fiber. This remained the case until the late 19th century when less expensive synthetic fibers became widely available for producers and consumers.
Modern synthetics like, polyester, nylon, and olefin are currently the most widely used and affordable fabric coverings. These fabrics are not only affordable, they also have a reputation for being steadfast in holding vibrant colors. Unfortunately, as convenient as these synthetic fibers are, nylon does not tolerate exposure to sunlight well and olefin is vulnerable to damage caused by moving furniture around. Polyester, while incredibly durable, is also incredibly prone to oil based stains which are some of the toughest stains to remove.
As you can see each fabric fiber is part of a unique category and therefore the cleaning of each fabric must be done on an individual basis. Synthetic fiber upholstery is often designed for easy manual cleaning, however certain stains are best removed by a professional.
USA Clean Master specializes in the hot water extraction method of deep cleaning. Deep cleaning upholstery can be challenging, especially if the target pieces are relatively old. Antique furnishings need special care, and some modern furniture is coated with flame retardants that must be handled carefully and may be damaged by exposure to certain cleaning agents.
Stubborn stains on suede, silk or period furniture with embroidered upholstery can be tricky to remove. Typical cleaning solutions found in the grocery store often contain powerful chemical agents which, when used improperly, can leave your upholstery in even worse shape or even permanently damaged.
USA Clean Master only uses environmentally friendly cleaning solutions, however it is the knowledge of our technicians and not the cleaning solution that guarantees our success. We can treat any number of upholstery fabrics with all kinds of stains. Our craftsmen can even repair torn fabric or even dye your pieces to match other upholstery arrangements.
